S. W. 24 Markgrafenstrasse April 26th 1874. Dear Sir I would gladly have written to you before this, concerning the autographs of Schubert, but my enquiries in Vienna and at other places remained quite fruitless. In Vienna the „Fantasie Sonate“ op. 78 might might be obtained from its present owner, but as I hear from my correspondent for a no smaller sum than 300 to 350 Austrian Gulden, equal to 233 2/3 Thalers and probably for a still higher price. This seemed to me a too exorbitant price, I therefore wrote nothing to you about it. Schubert’s Autographs are very dear, as they are not in the market but be long nearly all to private | collections. Nevertheless I have succeeded in procuring a small autograph which is specially interesting on account of its having a complete Title and complete Signature It is but a Fragment consisting of two full pages of notes with text. It is the end of a Comic-Terzett: „Die Advocaten.“ An Autograph of Schubert, consisting of three pages with the Name of the composer is of no small value on account of their being so rare, the price 15 Thalers = 2 ₤. 5. s. I find very cheap for it. I send you the Autograph that you may be able to see it yourself, which is much better than a mere description. I send it Registered and hope that it will reach you safely. In case you should | not buy it, I beg you to return it to me at once, by return of post, as the present owner does not know that I have sent it away, and I have promised him to return it in ten days, in case it should not have been bought. I also beg of you to let me know how much I owe you for the photographs. With repeted thanks for the photographs, and assuring you of my great esteem I am dear Sir Yours sincerely obliged F. W. Jähns. Prof.
