Der Text beruht auf der Tragödie “Othello ou Le More de Venise” (1792) von Jean François Ducis und der “azione patetica” “Otello” (1813) von Carlo Baron Cosenza, welche wiederum nach “The Tragedy of Othello, the Moore of Venice” (um 1603) von William Shakespeare entstanden war.
